Belonging to the Virginia Museum of Military Vehicles is this restored M3 medium tank in US army markings. It is armed with the longer-barrelled 75mm gun that began showing up on late-production M3 series medium tanks and was 9ft 8in in length. The majority came off the assembly line fitted with the 75mm gun labelled as the M2 that was 7ft 8in long. (Author’s collection)

US army Major General Jacob Devers, then head of the Armoured Force, poses in front of the medium tank M6, the prototype for the M4 series of medium tanks, on 3 September 1941. Devers played an important role in the development of American medium tanks before and during the Second World War. The M6 was armed with the short-barrelled M2 75mm main gun. (National Archives)
